
Archaeological Investigations Northwest, Inc. (AINW), was founded in 1989 to provide a broad array of cultural resource consulting services to both public and private clients in the Pacific Northwest. AINW is among the most highly qualified cultural resource firms in the western United States. AINW's professional archaeologists, historians, and architectural historians are experienced in a wide range of regulatory compliance and historic resource projects.
AINW Senior Staff have extensive experience and familiarity with federal, state, and local cultural resource laws, regulations, and procedures. Our staff includes specialists in prehistoric and historic-period archaeology, historical research, historic architecture, faunal analysis, historic ceramics analysis, lithic technology, and blood residue analysis. We also have a skilled technical and support staff involved in field archaeology, laboratory analysis, and report and graphics production.
All AINW Senior and Supervisory Staff meet the Professional Qualifications of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation projects (36 CFR 61, Appendix A) and have completed training in implementation of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
AINW’s Professional Senior and Supervisory Staff include 14 archaeologists, architectural historians, and historians.
• AINW’s senior staff include 4 Ph.D. archaeologists, 3 of whom are Registered Professional Archaeologists, and 7 M.A.-level archaeologists, including 4 who are Registered Professional Archaeologists. • One of our professional archaeologists also holds a M.A. degree in history and architectural history, and heads AINW’s architectural history department. • One of our professional archaeologists is also Hazwoper certified. • Among our professional archaeological staff are experts and specialists in: o Lithic Technology o Geoarchaeology o Human Osteology o Faunal Analysis o Historic-period artifacts• Our 4 architectural historians have expertise in HABS/HAER documentation and photographic recordation of standing structures. They routinely document and assess historic buildings, structures, and districts for NRHP eligibility, and assess project effects following federal and state guidelines and procedures.
• AINW’s technical staff includes 6 archaeologists, and among these are individuals who have specialties or who also serve in support roles. o Among AINW’s staff are archaeologists who have special expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the production of graphics for reports and site forms. o Others of our staff also assist with GIS and graphics production when the need arises. Our GIS/graphics department has the capability to import and export CAD data files and to prepare high-quality computer graphics and maps. o One of our staff archaeologists is AINW’s blood residue analysis technician. o One of AINW’s specialists in lithic analysis is also a staff archaeologist.

L. Fagan, Ph.D., R.P.A. AINW Corporate President, Senior Archaeologist, and Lithic
Technology Specialist. Dr. Fagan, co-founder/owner of AINW, began his professional career
in 1965 and has several decades of experience in archaeology of the Pacific Northwest and
the western United States. He has directed numerous
projects throughout the region. Dr. Fagan's 15-year tenure
as District Archaeologist for the Portland District of the Corps of Engineers provided him with
considerable knowledge of federal cultural resource programs and requirements. He is a
recognized authority on lithic analysis and replication of stone tools. john@ainw.com

Reese, M.A., R.P.A. AINW Corporate Vice President and Senior Archaeologist. Ms. Reese
is a co-founder/owner of AINW. She started her archaeological career in 1975 and has
focused on the field of cultural resource management. She has worked on many cultural
resource projects throughout Oregon and Washington, plus others in California and Nevada.
Her areas of archaeological specialization include the environmental setting of
prehistoric settlements, especially geoarchaeology and prehistory of the Columbia River.
She has extensive knowledge of regulatory requirements in the Pacific Northwest. jo@ainw.com
