AINW STAFF

Archaeological Investigations Northwest, Inc. (AINW), was founded in 1989 to provide a broad array of cultural resource consulting services to both public and private clients in the Pacific Northwest. AINW is among the most highly qualified cultural resource firms in the western United States. AINW's professional archaeologists, historians, and architectural historians are experienced in a wide range of regulatory compliance and historic resource projects.  

AINW Senior Staff have extensive experience and familiarity with federal, state, and local cultural resource laws, regulations, and procedures. Our staff includes specialists in prehistoric and historic-period archaeology, historical research, historic architecture, faunal analysis, historic ceramics analysis, bead technology, lithic technology, and blood residue analysis. We also have a skilled support staff involved in field archaeology, laboratory analysis, and report and graphics production. All AINW senior and supervisory staff meet the Professional Qualifications Standards of the Secretary of the Interior Guidelines for Historic Preservation Projects (36 CFR 61, Appendix A) and have completed training in implementation of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

John.GIF (9349 bytes) John L. Fagan, Ph.D., R.P.A. AINW Corporate President, Senior Archaeologist, and Lithic Technology Specialist. Dr. Fagan, co-founder/owner of AINW, has over 42 years of experience in archaeology of the Pacific Northwest and the western United States and historic preservation compliance. Since he began his professional career in 1965, he has directed numerous projects throughout the region. Dr. Fagan's 15-year tenure as District Archaeologist for the Portland District of the Corps of Engineers provided him with considerable knowledge of federal cultural resource programs and requirements. He is a recognized authority on lithic analysis and replication of stone tools. john@ainw.com



jo.GIF (9784 bytes) Jo Reese, M.A., R.P.A. AINW Corporate Vice President and Senior Archaeologist. Ms. Reese is a co-founder/owner of AINW. She started her archaeological career in 1975 and has focused on the field of cultural resource management. She has worked on many cultural resource projects throughout Oregon and Washington, plus others in California and Nevada. Her areas of archaeological specialization include the environmental setting of prehistoric settlements, especially geoarchaeology and prehistory of the Columbia River. She has extensive knowledge of regulatory requirements in the Pacific Northwest. jo@ainw.com

 


terry.GIF (10090 bytes) Terry Lee Ozbun, M.A., R.P.A. AINW Senior Archaeologist and Lithic Technology Specialist. Mr. Ozbun has worked throughout the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, and Idaho) and the Midwest for over 27 years as an archaeologist. He has conducted workshops and field schools in flintknapping and debitage analysis since 1988. His specialized studies include lithic technology and soils analysis. maureen.GIF (10082 bytes) Maureen M. Newman Zehendner, M.A., R.P.A. AINW Laboratory Director and Senior Archaeologist. Ms. Zehendner has more than 29 years experience in Pacific Northwest archaeology and cultural resource management, with special expertise in wet-site archaeology and curation of collections. She joined AINW's staff as Archaeological Laboratory Director in 1992. She also directs Portland-Vancouver area archaeological projects for AINW. maureen@ainw.com

Mr. Boynton has more than 38 years of archaeological field and program management experience in the Pacific Northwest, western, and southwestern states. He joined AINW in 2006 after 32 years with the U.S. Forest Service and Federal Highway Administration, Western Federal Lands Highway Division. He has extensive experience designing and implementing cultural resource fieldwork on federal, tribal, state, and private lands in concert with public agencies and Tribal governments. mike@ainw.com

Ms. Chapman has over 26 years experience in archaeology and historic architectural research in the Pacific Northwest. Jeff.jpg (7877 bytes) Jeff Lloyd-Jones, Ph.D., R.P.A.  AINW Senior Archaeologist/Osteologist.  Dr. Lloyd-Jones received his Ph.D. in Archaeology and Oral Biology from the University of Glasgow in 1999 and his B.A. in Anthropology from Arizona State University in 1991.  He has participated in archaeological excavations in the United States and Europe and directed forensic archaeological investigations in the Pacific Rim.  Prior to moving to Oregon he was an adjunct faculty member at Hawaii Pacific University teaching courses in anthropology and forensic sciences. jeff@ainw.com

 


michele.jpg (10031 bytes) Michele L. Punke, Ph.D., R.P.A. AINW Senior Geoarchaeologist. Dr. Punke joined the AINW staff in 2006 after receiving her Ph.D. in Physical Geography from Oregon State University (OSU). She received her master's degree in Anthropology from OSU in 2001. Her graduate studies involved archaeological research throughout Oregon, with emphasis on the prehistoric archaeology and paleoenvironmental settings of riverine and coastal landscapes. She specializes in geoarchaeology, paleoenvironmental landscape reconstructions, archaeological application in diatom analysis, and the implications of tectonics and geomorphology to archaeological site preservation. michele@ainw.com

 


Nick.jpeg (10031 bytes) Nicholas J. Smits, M.A., R.P.A. AINW Senior Archaeologist. Mr. Smits joined AINW in 2004. He completed his master's degree from Washington State University, has worked on projects for the BLM, U.S. Forest Service, and National Park Service, and has field experience in the Pacific Northwest as well as Montana, Utah, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and West Virginia. Adams, Ph.D.  AINW Supervising Archaeologist/Ethnologist.  Mr. Adams worked for AINW in 1999, and then returned in 2006 to assist with archaeological projects.  After completing his Ph.D. in Archaeology at Simon Fraser University in 2007, he joined AINW in a full-time position.  He has worked in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.  His main area of expertise is in ethnoarchaeology having done research on this subject in eastern Indonesia for both his M.A. and Ph.D. ron@ainw.com

 

 

Andrea.jpg (7877 bytes) Andrea Blaser, B.A. AINW Assistant Production Manager and Staff Architectural Historian. Ms. Blaser is expecting completion of her master’s degree in Historic Preservation from the University of Oregon in 2008. She has assisted with building documentations and research projects in Oregon. For her thesis she conducted field research in Australia and China to measure the impact of Olympic Games-related development on historic and cultural resources. Mr. Buchanan joined AINW in 2007 after working for a CRM firm in Northern Virginia as a field supervisor.  He received his M.A. from American University in Washington, D.C., and his past experiences include working for historic Mount Vernon excavating George Washington’s Whiskey Distillery as well as working on various historical and prehistoric sites throughout the Middle Atlantic Region. brian@ainw.com

 


Kelsey.jpg (7877 bytes) Kelsey Woodman Buchanan, M.A. AINW Supervising Archaeologist.  Ms. Buchanan joined AINW in 2007.  She received both her B.A. and M.A. degrees from American University in Washington, D.C.  Ms. Buchanan worked in the archaeology lab at American University and at a CRM firm in Northern Virginia.  She managed collections and analyzed artifacts from numerous historical and prehistoric sites in the Middle Atlantic Region.  Her main area of interest is ceramic and glass artifact analysis. kelsey@ainw.com

Mr. Cox joined AINW in 1999 after spending two years producing graphics and assisting in archaeological surveys for the U.S. Forest Service. He received his bachelor's degree in Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley in 1982, and completed two years of post-baccalaureate work in Anthropology/Archaeology from Portland State University. monique.gif (66877 bytes) Monique M. Cushing-Fournier, B.A. AINW Residue Analysis Laboratory Technician and Staff Archaeologist. Ms. Cushing originally worked at AINW between 1991 and 1994 with AINW's senior RAL technician and as an archaeologist. She rejoined the AINW staff in 1999. Ms. Cushing received her bachelor's degree in Anthropology from the University of Oregon in 1989 and her degree as a Medical Assistant Technician from the Ecole Club Migros in Sion, VS, Switzerland in 1980. monique@ainw.com

 


Sara.jpg (66877 bytes) Sara Davis, B.A. AINW Staff Archaeologist. Ms. Davis completed her B.A. degree in Anthropology at Portland State University in 2003. She worked part-time for AINW as an Archaeological Assistant during 2004, 2005, and 2007, and began the full-time position of Staff Archaeologist in 2007. She is anticipating completion of her M.A. degree in 2008. Ms. Davis has done archaeological fieldwork and historical research in Oregon and Washington. sara@ainw.com

Ms. Doyle received her B.S. degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz in Environmental and Organismal Biology, with a Minor in Business Administration. Her scientific background includes five years in analytical laboratory science in quality control chemistry and molecular analysis. Her business experience includes six years in administrative support. Morgan.jpeg (66877 bytes) Morgan A. Frazier, B.A. AINW GIS Technical Specialist and Staff Archaeologist. Ms. Frazier joined AINW in 2004 after spending more than two years as an archaeological consultant to the U.S. Army in Hawai'i through her contract position as a cultural resource specialist. In 1999, she received her bachelor's degree in Anthropology from the University of Hawai'i at Hilo, specializing in Pacific archaeology. Her area of expertise is in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). She also has extensive field experience in Hawai'i and has worked as an interpretive park ranger for the U.S. Forest Service in Washington. morgan@ainw.com

Held, M.A. AINW Historian/Architectural Historian.  A fourth-generation Oregonian, Mr. Held joined AINW after 15 years in Colorado where he worked for the state DOT, SHPO, and a private environmental consulting firm.  He has over a decade of experience as a historian, historic preservationist, and project manager, and has worked on CRM projects in Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona, and California.  Mr. Held received his M.A. in History and Historic Preservation from Colorado State University in 1996, and his B.A. in History from the University of Oregon. jon@ainw.com

Ms. O'Brien specializes in architectural resources and has extensive experience documenting and evaluating various historic property types. Prior to joining AINW in 2002, she worked on a variety of surveys and inventories of historic preservation projects, prepared National Register nominations, and served as the Grants Manager at Oregon's State Historic Preservation Office. Kurt.jpg (10031 bytes) Kurt Perkins, B.S. AINW Staff Archaeologist. Mr. Perkins joined AINW in 2007. He received his B.S. degree from Oregon State University in 1997, and is currently completing his M.A. degree at the University of Idaho. His thesis deals with lithic assemblages from the Clearwater and Snake River drainages.
